As we all get older in life we do tend to experience higher rates of foot problems including foot pain.
To maintain your mobility and the lifestyle that you desire you need to maintain your foot health.
We take the time to answer your questions and offer solutions to help keep you moving and enjoying life.
We can assess if your current footwear is offering you the support in your feet, that includes support under your arch.
Older people are much more likely to have problems with their blood flow in their legs as blood flow decreases with age. We will assess your blood flow using a hand held Doppler ultrasound device which assesses your risk of peripheral arterial disease (PAD).
We can recommend appropriate footwear options such as Velcro or lace ups, extra width or extra depth to accommodate foot deformities such as bunions or retracted toes.
Seniors are at a greater risk of falls
Slips, trips and falls can happen to anyone, but they are more common and more significant as we get older, because we are more likely to injure ourselves.
As we age, our feet can change shape and lose some feeling and flexibility. This changes the way we walk and affects balance.
Painful or swollen feet can make it difficult to walk. Also, some shoes or slippers can make you more likely to slip, trip or stumble, leading to a fall.
Prevent falls with safe shoes
What you can do:
- Contact us now to arrange a home visit if you have painful or swollen feet, tingling or pins and needles in your feet or if you have any changes in the shape of your feet (for example, bunions).
- Choose comfortable, firm-fitting, flat shoes with a low broad heel and soles that grip.
- Don’t wear poorly fitted slippers or walk in socks.
- If you have difficulty finding suitable shoes because of foot problems, we will recommend our specialist shoe supplier who has a wide range of suitable footwear for men and women.
- During your home visit consultation we can suggest ways to improve circulation, decrease swelling and reduce pain in the legs and feet.
Common foot conditions that affect older people
Nail disorders
Thickened, fungal, elongated nails. If nails are not cared for properly they become sharp, jagged and are a risk of you getting skin tears due to sharp nails. They will become painful as the nails will start to push into your shoes.
Older people’s nails experience a decline in blood supply that results in grooves and an overall increase in thickness. Thickened nails if left untreated will continue to get thicker and you risk the nail separating from the nail bed. For fungal nails we will assess the severity of the fungal infection and tailor the treatment options to help keep your nails healthy.
Toe deformities
Toe deformities of the smaller toes are common in older people. Women are more likely to experience hammer toes (retracted toes). If you have a retracted toe you are more likely to also have corns on the top surface and callus under the surface of the toe. Toe deformities can affect your balance as well as the toes are not in their anatomically correct position.
We will assess your footwear to make sure they are suitable for your foot type, supply toe foam that assists in reducing pressure on your toes, inter-digital gel spaces can also offer relief or we can make a custom wedge device to help separate painful toes.
Corns and callus
If corns and callus are not reduced and treated they will cause you to experience pain when you walk. Corns and callus can indicate areas of higher pressures under your foot that can lead to more serious complications such as ulcerations.
We will discuss treatment options such as using insole felt padding that can assist in deflecting pressures away from the corn / callus and review your footwear for signs of wear.
Bunions
Having bunions increases the risk of falls as the bunion affects how your foot pushes off the ground when you walk. A bunion makes your foot less stable. We can offer advice on how to manage your bunions, which ranges from conservative care right through to surgical correction.
Foot pain
Under the arch, heel and forefoot. Older people tend to have a reduced amount of padding found under the forefoot which can cause foot pain under the ball of your foot. As part of the ageing process the padding area becomes thinner over time. Arthritis in the foot bones is commonly experienced in our older patients and we are well placed to offer advice and suggestions on how to keep active. If you have a flat foot that is causing you pain and limiting your mobility we are able to help.
Swollen legs / feet
If your legs and feet become enlarged from fluid that builds up over time, you will find it harder to walk around and your legs will feel heavy. This will also affect your balance that could cause you to be at a higher risk of falling over.
Dry and fragile skin
If your skin is not kept hydrated with leg cream it will become dry, flaky and become thin and you will be at a higher risk of developing skin tears. Dry and cracked heels are common in older people due to age related decline in skin elasticity.
We will check your heels to ensure you are not at risk of developing heel fissures that if left untreated can become infected and cause you pain when walking. Every consultation includes a foot massage with foot cream to keep your feet hydrated and feeling fresh.
