Frequently Asked Questions

How do you clean and sterilize the instruments?

All podiatry instruments are not just clean they must be sterile before being used.

In accordance with the National Infection Control Guidelines for Podiatrists in Australia, every set of podiatry instruments are washed and scrubbed in clean water with detergent, dried thoroughly then placed into a new sterilization pouch.

Each pouch is then placed into an autoclave machine that sterilizes the instruments at very high temperatures for a period of time.

The autoclave machine is calibrated and checked on an annual basis by the manufacturer’s certified technicians.

What are the qualifications to be a podiatrist?

To become a podiatrist in Australia requires the successful completion of the Bachelor of Podiatry at University.

To practice as a podiatrist in Australia requires registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

Don’t you just cut nails?

No. Podiatry is more than simple nail care. We need to assess you as an individual, taking into account your medical history and your presenting complaint.

But how can diabetes affect my feet?

We need to identify your lower limb / foot risk status. Patients for example that have a foot ulcer and diabetes with blood sugar levels that are higher than normal will be classified as a high foot risk, as their ability to heal a wound can be reduced due to their diabetes. These patients require a podiatrist to manage their foot health with the aim of improving their wound so they don’t develop a chronic wound that can lead to amputation.

Diabetes is not the only condition that can affect your feet, arthritis for example can lead to foot deformity as seen with rheumatoid arthritis.

Do podiatrists know more than just about feet?

Yes. We have an in-depth knowledge of body systems such as circulatory (arteries and veins), integumentary (skin, nails and sweat glands), nervous (sensory and motor nerves) and skeletal (bones and joints).

We work closely with other health providers such as: doctors, nurses, specialists and other health providers such as physiotherapists and diabetic educators.

Can podiatry home visits be included in my home care package?

Yes. We work with many care provider companies who support people with living at home. Just speak to your care support manager and mention you would like to have us assist you with your podiatry home care.

I’m with the NDIS, can you help me?

Yes. We work with many patients who are registered with the NDIS. We are registered as an NDIS provider and are able to assist you. Just speak to your NDIS support coordinator and ask them to contact us.

I have a Medicare referral from my doctor, do you accept them?

Yes. We do accept Medicare referrals. The Medicare Allied Health program allows for up to 5 visits per calendar year.

Can I claim podiatry through my health fund extras?

Depending on your level of cover, podiatry can be a claimable service. Check with your health fund to see if you are covered for podiatry. We are registered with every health fund in Australia.

I am a Department of Veteran’s Affairs (DVA) Gold card holder. Can I see you?

Yes. We do see patients who are DVA gold card holders.
