Podiatrists are highly skilled and trained in the management of diabetics and other at risk patients.
A medical history is taken and health risk factors are identified. We examine your feet in detail and identify any concerns such as the development of callus which can indicate areas of higher pressure which can result in ulceration.
Foot deformity such as bunions can result in a person being less stable while walking, bunions are a risk factor for increased risk of falling over.
If a patient with diabetes has a bunion and wears poor fitting footwear this can result in ulceration at the big toe area leading to pain, reduced mobility and more serious outcomes such as infection and a wound.
Patient education about diabetes is provided to ensure you know your risk status and what you can do to help keep your feet healthy.
We will assess your foot risk status by performing vascular and neurological assessments.
Vascular assessment includes:
- Checking foot pulses.
- Using a Doppler ultrasound hand held device to assess your arterial blood flow in your feet. This test assesses your risk of peripheral arterial disease.
- Assessing foot colour and temperature, presence of hair, skin integrity and presence of swelling of the leg or foot.
Neurological assessment includes:
- Using a monofilament to assess if you are able to detect sensation under and on the top of your feet.
- Using a device to assess if you can feel vibration under your feet.
